ZAGG Shipping, the largest private cargo shipping company in the world, will begin loading its container ships with 3.5 million tonnes of containerised freight on Wednesday, with the Cork and Limerick docks expected to see their first shipments from ZAGP on Wednesday afternoon.
The company will also commence delivering a further 7,500 tonnes of containers to the Cork Harbour in the next few days, with a further 3,500-tonne container ship to be delivered from Limerick Harbour this week.ZAGG said the shipping company will deliver a total of more than 5,000 containers, of which 2,000 will be for Cork.
Zagg has been using its own cargo ship to transport freight in recent months and has been shipping containers across the Mediterranean, Asia and Europe.
It currently ships containers from the United States to Japan, Canada, Australia and Europe, but has been looking to scale up its operations to deliver a larger cargo load, which it says could help reduce shipping costs.
Its cargo ships currently carry more than 300,000 tons of freight, which would increase to 2,300-2,400 tonnes by the end of the year.
However, the company has been struggling to meet its costs, with its profits declining to about €100 million from €170 million last year.
It also said it expects to incur some financial costs on the ship, but is optimistic about the future of its operations.
The Cork port is a hub for shipping between the US, China, Europe, the UK and other countries.
